Oil is typically known to congeal or thicken when the engines' temperature is low and liquifies when the temperature is high. This is known as viscosity. Engine oil is therefore graded according to its viscosity. In the automotive industry, the grade of an oil is therefore denoted with the temperature degrees starting from the low to high.
The numbers you are wondering about symbolize the temperature at which oil reacts to engine cooling and heating. For example 20W-50 means that the oil starts to thicken when the engines’ temperature gets to 20 degrees low and liquifies when it gets to 50 degrees high.
This process of reaction to varying temperatures is called viscosity and it means a lot to your engine. As engine oil is used for lubrication of the parts that keep your vehicle in motion, it is important for you to know at which level is my engine oil liquified or congealed. The faster it gets liquified, the better.
remember, viscosity varies from fuel to fuel.
